Traffic signals — Ohio Permit Test

Traffic signals on the Ohio permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

A red light means stopping before the intersection and waiting behind the stop line, crosswalk or intersection until it turns green.

Where you stop matters as much as that you stopped, because the crosswalk belongs to somebody.

A red traffic light means stop before entering the intersection. You must wait behind the stop line, crosswalk, or intersection until the traffic light turns green.

Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws, p.14

A yellow light means the signal is about to turn red: use caution and prepare to stop.

It is a warning about what comes next, not an invitation to use what is left.

A yellow traffic light indicates the color is about to change to red; use caution. Prepare to stop.

Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws, p.14

A green light means you may travel through the intersection with caution if it is clear, and a green arrow means you may turn that way without stopping.

Green gives permission, never protection; the intersection still has to be clear.

A green traffic light means you may travel with caution through the intersection if it is clear to do so.

Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws, p.14

A flashing red light requires a complete stop behind the stop line, crosswalk or intersection, and a check that nothing is crossing your path before entering.

It is a stop sign made of light, and it is treated exactly like one.

Stop behind a stop line, crosswalk, or intersection before entering and come to a complete stop.

Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws, p.14

A flashing yellow light means slowing down and proceeding with caution, ready to stop for traffic entering the intersection.

The flashing pair divide the work: yellow slows you, red stops you.

Slow down and proceed with caution. Be prepared to stop for any traffic flow that may be entering the intersection.

On the test

Where must you wait at a red traffic light?

Behind the stop line, crosswalk, or intersection. Where you stop matters as much as that you stopped, because the crosswalk belongs to somebody. Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws, p.14: “A red traffic light means stop before entering the intersection. You must wait behind the stop line, crosswalk, or intersection until the traffic light turns green.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
