Turn on red — Ohio Permit Test

Turn on red on the Ohio permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

A right turn on red is permitted unless a sign forbids it, and only after a complete stop and after all crossing traffic and pedestrians have cleared.

It is a turn that begins from a stop, which is why rolling it is the common failure.

You may turn right at a red traffic signal, unless a sign specifically prohibits it.

Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws, p.25

A left turn on red is allowed only from the extreme left lane of a one-way street onto another one-way street, and only where no sign forbids it.

Both streets have to be one-way, which is what makes the turn possible at all.

You may turn left at a red traffic signal, only from the extreme left lane of a one-way street onto another one-way street, unless the intersection has a sign posted forbidding a left turn on red.

Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws, p.25

When a light turns green a driver should pause before moving in, because other road users may not obey their own signals or signs.

The first second of green is when the last car runs the red.

At a traffic signal when the light turns green, pause before moving into the intersection.

Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws, p.25

Where a stop sign leaves no view of crossing traffic, a driver stops first and then edges forward to see before entering.

Two stops, not one: the legal one at the line and the useful one where you can see.

When stopped at a stop sign where you cannot see crossing traffic, edge forward to check for traffic before entering the intersection.

On the test

What must happen before a right turn on red?

A complete stop, and crossing traffic and pedestrians clear. It is a turn that begins from a stop, which is why rolling it is the common failure. Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws, p.25: “You may turn right at a red traffic signal, unless a sign specifically prohibits it.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
