Junior license — Pennsylvania Permit Test
Junior license on the Pennsylvania permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
A junior driver generally may not drive between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. unless a statutory exception applies.
Late at night the roads are dark and full of tired drivers, which is a lot to ask of a new one.
During the first six months of a junior license, the driver may carry no more than one passenger under 18 who is not immediate family, absent the statutory adult-supervision exception.
A car full of friends is the biggest thing pulling a young driver eyes off the road.
After the first six months, an eligible junior driver may carry up to three nonfamily passengers under 18 if the driver has no disqualifying crash or conviction.
The limit lifts one seat at a time, and only for a driver who has kept a clean record.
A junior driver’s license automatically becomes a regular license when the driver turns 18.
The junior rules are tied to your age, so they end on your birthday with no new test to take.
A driver under 18 receives a 90-day first suspension for reaching six points or for a conviction of driving 26 mph or more over the posted limit.
Six points or one very fast ticket both say the same thing, so both cost the same time off the road.
A later occurrence of the under-18 six-point or excessive-speed trigger results in a 120-day suspension.
A second suspension is longer because the first one clearly did not change anything.
On the test
What overnight period is generally restricted for a Pennsylvania junior driver?
11 p.m. to 5 a.m.. Late at night the roads are dark and full of tired drivers, which is a lot to ask of a new one.
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
