Pavement markings — Pennsylvania Permit Test
Pavement markings on the Pennsylvania permit test — 8 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Yellow center lines separate traffic moving in opposite directions.
Yellow tells you the cars past that line are coming at you, which changes what you may do.
White lane lines separate lanes of traffic moving in the same direction.
White tells you the traffic past that line is going your way, so crossing it is far less risky.
A broken yellow center line permits passing when the line is on the driver’s side and the opposing lane is clear.
The broken line means you may cross into the other side, if you can see far enough to get back.
A solid yellow center line on the driver’s side means the driver may not cross it to pass.
A solid line marks road where you would run out of sight before you got back in.
Double solid yellow center lines prohibit passing in both directions.
Two solid lines mean neither side can see far enough to pass, so the ban runs both ways.
A broken white line separates same-direction lanes and may be crossed for a safe lane change.
The broken pattern permits lane movement but does not replace mirror, signal, and blind-spot checks.
A stop line shows where a vehicle must stop for a stop sign or traffic signal.
Stopping at the line keeps you out of the crossing and out of the path of cars coming across.
A painted crosswalk marks a pedestrian crossing area that drivers must keep clear while yielding.
A car stopped over the paint pushes people on foot out into moving traffic to get past it.
On the test
What traffic movements are separated by yellow center lines?
Traffic moving in opposite directions. Yellow tells you the cars past that line are coming at you, which changes what you may do.
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
