The rules
When a school bus stops with its red lights flashing and its stop arm out, you must stop at least 10 feet away, whether you are behind it, coming toward it, or approaching the intersection where it has stopped.

It is one of the heaviest penalties in the manual, because of who is in the road.

There is one exception to stopping for a school bus: if you are on the opposite side of a divided highway with a barrier or median between you, you need not stop, but you should slow down and go on with caution.
The barrier is what keeps the children out of your lane; without one there is no exception.

How far from a stopped school bus with its stop arm out must you stop?
