Turning — Pennsylvania Permit Test
Turning on the Pennsylvania permit test — 7 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
When traveling below 35 mph, signal at least 100 feet before turning.
Early signaling gives nearby road users enough time to react to the planned speed and direction change.
When traveling above 35 mph, signal at least 300 feet before turning.
Higher speed covers more road during reaction time, so the warning must begin farther away.
After a complete stop, a driver may turn right on red unless a sign prohibits the turn, provided the driver yields to traffic and pedestrians.
The turn is allowed from a stop, not from a roll, and anyone with a green light still goes first.
After stopping in the left lane, a left turn on red is permitted from a one-way street onto another one-way street unless a sign prohibits it.
This turn works only because nothing is coming the other way, and the stop keeps the crossing safe.
A U-turn is prohibited near a curve or hill crest when the vehicle cannot be seen from either direction within 500 feet.
A car turning around blocks both lanes at once, which is the worst thing to meet coming over a blind hill.
Signal before changing lanes and before entering traffic from a parked position.
Other drivers plan on you going straight, and the signal is the only thing that tells them otherwise in time.
Cancel the turn signal immediately after completing a turn or lane change.
A signal left flashing can cause another driver to enter a path the signaling vehicle does not intend to leave.
On the test
Below 35 mph, how far ahead of a turn must a driver signal?
100 feet. Early signaling gives nearby road users enough time to react to the planned speed and direction change.
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
