Blood alcohol concentration — Rhode Island Permit Test
Blood alcohol concentration on the Rhode Island permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is the ratio of alcohol to blood in the bloodstream at a given time.
Without one clear measure, nobody could say for sure who is too drunk to drive.
The blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is the ratio of alcohol to blood (to body weight) present in the bloodstream at any given time.
In Rhode Island, a driver of any age with a BAC of .08% or more is intoxicated and charged with Driving Under the Influence (DUI).
A driver at .08% has lost enough judgment and reaction time to be a real danger on the road.
Any person of any age with a BAC of .08% or more is intoxicated and will be charged with drunk driving – Driving Under the Influence (DUI).
A Rhode Island driver under 21 is impaired at a BAC of .02%.
A young driver who has had even one drink can be over the limit for his age.
Any person under the age of twenty-one (21) with a BAC of .02% but less than .08% is impaired and will be charged with Driving While Impaired (DWI).
A driver under 21 with a BAC of at least .02% but less than .08% is charged with Driving While Impaired (DWI).
A 19-year-old below the adult limit is still charged, so being under .08 is no defense for him.
Any person under the age of twenty-one (21) with a BAC of .02% but less than .08% is impaired and will be charged with Driving While Impaired (DWI).
Your BAC depends on how much you drank, how much you weigh, how much you ate before drinking, how long you have been drinking and how fast your body processes alcohol.
Two people who drink the same amount can have very different BACs, so counting drinks is not enough.
Your BAC depends on several factors:
The speed at which the body processes alcohol is different for each person.
A driver who goes by a friend's limit can be far more drunk than the friend.
The speed at which your body processes the alcohol in your system, which is different for each person.
On the test
What does blood alcohol concentration (BAC) measure?
The ratio of alcohol to blood. Without one clear measure, nobody could say for sure who is too drunk to drive. Rhode Island Driver’s Manual, p.61: “The blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is the ratio of alcohol to blood (to body weight) present in the bloodstream at any given time.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
