Emergency vehicles and move over — Rhode Island Permit Test
Emergency vehicles and move over on the Rhode Island permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
When an emergency vehicle is approaching, pull over to the right, stop, and wait for it to pass.
An ambulance cannot get through if cars stop in the middle of the road or pull to the left.
If an emergency vehicle is approaching, pull over to the right, stop and wait for it to pass.
Before pulling back into traffic after an emergency vehicle passes, signal and glance over your shoulder for a second emergency vehicle.
Fire trucks often travel in pairs, and the second one hits the driver who pulled out after the first.
Before re-entering the flow of traffic, activate your turn signal, glance over your shoulder to ensure another emergency vehicle is not coming, then proceed.
Rhode Island tells drivers to stay 500 feet behind emergency vehicles.
A fire truck can stop hard at a scene, and a car right behind it has no room.
Always drive 500 feet behind emergency vehicles.
Under the Move Over Law, on a road with more than one lane in your direction you must change lanes away from a designated vehicle as soon as it is safe.
Police officers and tow drivers on the shoulder are killed by cars passing a foot away at full speed.
If you are driving on an interstate or roadway with multiple lanes of travel in the same direction, you must move over by changing lanes away from the designated vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so.
Under the Move Over Law, if you cannot safely change lanes away from the designated vehicle, you must slow down.
Swerving into a lane that is full can cause a crash, so slowing gives the worker the margin instead.
If you are not able to safely move over, you must slow down.
On the test
An emergency vehicle is coming toward you with its siren on. What must you do?
Pull to the right and stop. An ambulance cannot get through if cars stop in the middle of the road or pull to the left. Rhode Island Driver’s Manual, p.36: “If an emergency vehicle is approaching, pull over to the right, stop and wait for it to pass.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
