Passing basics — Rhode Island Permit Test
Passing basics on the Rhode Island permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Before passing, ask whether it is legal, safe and worth it; all three answers must be yes.
A pass that is legal but not safe still ends head-on with an oncoming car.
All three (3) questions must be YES for you to justify passing:
On multi-lane highways the law requires you to use the left lane to pass and the right lane for through traffic.
Drivers cruising in the left lane force others to weave around them on the right.
On multiple lane highways, the law requires you to use the left lane to pass and the right lane for through traffic or normal driving.
When another vehicle is passing you, reduce your speed a little and keep to the right.
Speeding up as you are passed traps the other driver beside you in the oncoming lane.
When you are being passed by another vehicle, you should reduce your speed a little and keep to the right.
Avoid putting packages or other large items in the back seat or on the rear window ledge, where they can cause a blind spot.
A box on the back shelf can hide a whole car in your rear-view mirror.
Avoid placing packages or other large items in the back seat or on the rear window ledge, which could cause a blind spot.
On the test
Of the manual's three passing questions, how many must be answered yes before you pass?
All three. A pass that is legal but not safe still ends head-on with an oncoming car. Rhode Island Driver’s Manual, p.33: “All three (3) questions must be YES for you to justify passing:”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
