Provisional license curfew — Rhode Island Permit Test

Provisional license curfew on the Rhode Island permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

A learner provisional license holder may not drive alone between 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m.

Late-night roads hold tired and drunk drivers, the worst company for a new driver alone.

A PERSON WITH A LEARNER PROVISIONAL LICENSE CANNOT DRIVE BY THEMSELVES BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 1:00 A.M. AND 5:00 A.M.

Rhode Island Driver’s Manual, p.14

A provisional license holder may drive at any time, including 1:00 to 5:00 a.m., if a supervising driver sits beside them.

Without this rule a teen with a late shift would have no lawful way home at all.

A supervising driver must be seated beside you while the vehicle is in motion.

Rhode Island Driver’s Manual, p.14

A provisional license holder may drive alone during curfew hours when driving to or from work.

A teen with an early shift would be stuck with no ride if work trips were banned.

When driving to or from work.

Rhode Island Driver’s Manual, p.14

A provisional license holder who is a member of a volunteer fire department, rescue squad or emergency medical service may drive alone during curfew hours to or from its activities.

A teen volunteer firefighter paged at 3 a.m. could not answer the call if the curfew had no exception.

When driving to or from any activity of a volunteer fire department, volunteer rescue squad, or volunteer emergency medical service if the driver is a member of such organization.

Rhode Island Driver’s Manual, p.14

From 4:00 to 5:00 a.m., a provisional license holder may drive alone between home and a school-sponsored athletic activity when the school provides no transportation.

A teen with a dawn practice and no bus would have no legal way to get there.

From 4:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. when driving between license holder’s home and a school sponsored athletic activity for which no transportation is provided by the school.

Rhode Island Driver’s Manual, p.14

A learner provisional license expires on your 18th birthday.

A driver who keeps using it past 18 is driving on a license that no longer exists.

This license expires on your eighteenth (18th) birthday.

On the test

During which hours may a Rhode Island provisional license holder NOT drive alone?

1:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m.. Late-night roads hold tired and drunk drivers, the worst company for a new driver alone. Rhode Island Driver’s Manual, p.14: “A PERSON WITH A LEARNER PROVISIONAL LICENSE CANNOT DRIVE BY THEMSELVES BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 1:00 A.M. AND 5:00 A.M.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
