Provisional license requirements — Rhode Island Permit Test

Provisional license requirements on the Rhode Island permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

To get a learner provisional license, you must not have been convicted of a moving violation or a safety belt infraction in the previous 6 months.

A learner who keeps breaking traffic laws should not be handed more freedom on the road.

Not have been convicted of a motor vehicle moving violation or a safety belt infraction during the previous six (6) months.

Rhode Island Driver’s Manual, p.12

To get a learner provisional license, you must pass the driving skills test given by the DMV.

Without a road test the state never sees whether the learner can actually handle a car.

Have passed the driving skills test administered by the DMV.

Rhode Island Driver’s Manual, p.12

Before a learner provisional license, a permit holder must complete at least 50 hours of driving with a supervising driver.

A teen with only a few hours behind the wheel has never met rain, rush hour or a sudden stop.

Must complete fifty (50) hours of supervised driving with a qualified supervising driver.

Rhode Island Driver’s Manual, p.15

Of the 50 required supervised hours, at least 10 must be driven at night.

A teen who has only driven in daylight meets glare and dark curves for the first time alone.

The permitee must complete ten (10) of those hours at night.

On the test

Which conviction in the last 6 months keeps you from getting a learner provisional license?

A safety belt infraction. A learner who keeps breaking traffic laws should not be handed more freedom on the road. Rhode Island Driver’s Manual, p.12: “Not have been convicted of a motor vehicle moving violation or a safety belt infraction during the previous six (6) months.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
