Space to the side and behind — South Carolina Permit Test
Space to the side and behind on the South Carolina permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Avoid crowding the centerline; keep as much space as possible between you and oncoming traffic.
Oncoming cars that drift over the line have the least room to miss you if you are close to it.
Avoid crowding the centerline marking.
Make space for vehicles entering a multiple-lane or limited-access road by moving over a lane or adjusting your speed.
A merging driver with nowhere to go may be forced into your side or onto the shoulder.
Make space for vehicles entering a multiple-lane or limited access roadway by moving over a lane or adjusting your speed.
Give extra space to pedestrians, especially children, the elderly, and bicyclists.
These road users can move unpredictably and have no protection if struck.
Give extra space to pedestrians, especially children, the elderly, and bicyclists.
When a tractor trailer passes you, move to the outside portion of your lane, away from the truck.
Wind from a large truck can push your car sideways, and the extra gap absorbs it.
When a passing vehicle is a tractor trailer, leave a little more space by moving to the outside portion of your lane space away from the tractor trailer as it passes.
You can help keep a following driver at a safe distance by keeping a steady speed, signaling in advance, and leaving more space in front before you slow or turn.
A driver behind who is surprised by your braking has little room to stop.
However, you can help keep the driver in the vehicle behind you at a safe distance by keeping a steady speed, signaling in advance, and keeping more space to the front of your vehicle before you reduce speed or turn.
On the test
Where in your lane should you avoid driving on a two-way road?
Close to the center line. Oncoming cars that drift over the line have the least room to miss you if you are close to it. South Carolina Driver's Manual, p.100: “Avoid crowding the centerline marking.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
