Enforcement stop conduct — South Dakota Permit Test
Enforcement stop conduct on the South Dakota permit test — 7 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
During an enforcement stop, acknowledge the officer by turning on your right turn signal.
An officer who sees no sign that you noticed may think you are trying to get away or are impaired.
Acknowledge the officer’s presence by turning on your right turn signal.
For an enforcement stop, move to the right shoulder; do not stop in the center median of a freeway or on the opposite side of a two-lane road.
Stopping in the median puts you and the officer beside fast traffic with nowhere to step.
On a freeway, move completely onto the right shoulder, even if you’re in the carpool/HOV lane.
If you are stopped by an officer after dark, look for a well-lit place, such as an area with street or freeway lights, near restaurants or service stations.
A dark stretch of road makes it hard for the officer to see you and for passing drivers to see you both.
When it is dark look for locations that are well lit, such as areas with street or freeway lights, near restaurants, or service stations.
During an enforcement stop, end your cell phone conversation and turn off your radio.
An officer who must compete with a phone call or music takes longer, keeping you both on the roadside.
End your cell phone conversation and turn off your radio.
During an enforcement stop, remain inside your vehicle unless the officer directs you to get out.
Stepping out on the roadside can get you struck by a passing car and alarms the officer.
Remain inside your vehicle unless otherwise directed by the officer.
During an enforcement stop, keep your hands and all passengers' hands in clear view, such as on the steering wheel or on top of your lap.
An officer who cannot see hands has to treat the stop as a threat, and things can go wrong fast.
Place your hands in clear view, including all passengers’ hands, such as on the steering wheel, on top of your lap, etc.
If your windows are tinted, the manual recommends rolling them down after you stop on the right shoulder and before the officer makes contact.
Behind dark glass the officer cannot see who is in the car or what their hands are doing.
If your windows are tinted, it is recommended that you roll down your windows after you have stopped your vehicle on the right shoulder of the roadway and before the officer makes contact with you.
On the test
An officer signals you to stop. How do you show you have seen them?
Turn on your right turn signal. An officer who sees no sign that you noticed may think you are trying to get away or are impaired. South Dakota Driver License Manual, p.46: “Acknowledge the officer’s presence by turning on your right turn signal.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
