Front seat belt law — South Dakota Permit Test
Front seat belt law on the South Dakota permit test — 3 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
The law requires all operators, front seat passengers and children under 18 to wear appropriate safety restraints while the vehicle is in motion.
A teen in the back seat without a belt becomes a missile that hits the people in front.
The law requires that all operators, front seat passengers and children under the age of 18 wear appropriate safety restraints while the vehicle is in motion.
The driver must secure, or cause to be secured, a seat belt on any front-seat passenger who is at least 5 but younger than 18 years old.
A young passenger left unbuckled is the one most likely to be badly hurt, and the driver answers for it.
The driver of the passenger vehicle shall secure or cause to be secured a properly adjusted and fastened safety seatbelt system on any passenger in the front seat who is at least five years of age but younger than eighteen years of age.
A violation of South Dakota’s front-seat belt law, SDCL 32-38-1, is not a moving traffic offense.
Belt laws exist to save lives in crashes, not to stack up driving-record marks.
Any violation of this section is not a moving traffic offense under the provisions of § 32-12-49.1.
On the test
Besides drivers and front-seat passengers, who must wear safety restraints under South Dakota law?
Children under the age of 18. A teen in the back seat without a belt becomes a missile that hits the people in front. South Dakota Driver License Manual, p.26: “The law requires that all operators, front seat passengers and children under the age of 18 wear appropriate safety restraints while the vehicle is in motion.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
