Instruction permit holding period — South Dakota Permit Test
Instruction permit holding period on the South Dakota permit test — 3 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
A minor aged 14 to 17 must hold the instruction permit continuously for 275 days before upgrading to a restricted minor's permit or operator's license.
New drivers crash most in their first months, so the long wait keeps an adult in the seat while mistakes are common.
Minors at least 14 years of age, but less than 18 years of age, must hold the valid permit continuously for 275 days (180 days if successful completion [score of 80% or better on both written and driving portions of driver education] of an approved Department of Education driver education course) prior to upgrading the permit to a Restricted Minor’s Permit or Operator’s License.
A minor who successfully completes an approved Department of Education driver education course needs to hold the instruction permit for only 180 days.
A teen who skipped the class has had no trained teacher watch their habits, so they need more time with an adult.
Driver education shortens the permit period only with a score of 80% or better on both the written and driving portions.
A teen who scrapes through the class without learning it would get the short wait while still driving badly.
On the test
Without driver education, how long must a minor hold an instruction permit before upgrading?
275 days. New drivers crash most in their first months, so the long wait keeps an adult in the seat while mistakes are common. South Dakota Driver License Manual, p.8: “Minors at least 14 years of age, but less than 18 years of age, must hold the valid permit continuously for 275 days (180 days if successful completion [score of 80% or better on both written and driving portions of driver education] of an approved Department of Education driver education course) prior to upgrading the permit to a Restricted Minor’s Permit or Operator’s License.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
