Tire pressure check — South Dakota Permit Test

Tire pressure check on the South Dakota permit test — 3 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

Check tire pressure with a pressure gauge monthly, and check it when the tires are cold.

An underinflated tire heats up, wears fast and can blow out at highway speed.

Remove the cap from the valve stem and use the pressure gauge to check the tire pressure (make sure you check when they are cold).

South Dakota Driver License Manual, p.23

The recommended tire pressure (PSI) is on a sticker on the inside jamb of the driver door or in the owner’s manual.

Guessing the pressure leaves tires too soft or too hard, and the car steers and stops badly.

Prior to entering a vehicle, check tire pressures using the recommended PSI (pounds per square inch) located in the vehicle owner’s manual or the driver side door jamb of the vehicle.

South Dakota Driver License Manual, p.24

If the gauge reads higher than the door-jamb number, let air out; if it reads lower, add air until the numbers match.

A tire left far off its right pressure grips poorly and can fail in a hard stop.

If the number is too high, let air out of the tire.

On the test

How often does the manual say to check tire pressure with a gauge?

Once a month. An underinflated tire heats up, wears fast and can blow out at highway speed. South Dakota Driver License Manual, p.23: “Remove the cap from the valve stem and use the pressure gauge to check the tire pressure (make sure you check when they are cold).”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
