Interstate interchanges — Tennessee Permit Test
Interstate interchanges on the Tennessee permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
At any interchange, follow the signs that tell you how to make the turn you want.
Interchanges come in many shapes. The signs, not a guess, put you on the right ramp.
When approaching any type of interchange, follow the signs telling you how to make the turn you want to make.
At a cloverleaf interchange, all turns are right turns.
You never cross oncoming traffic, so you never wait for a gap in it.
At a cloverleaf interchange, all turns are right turns.
At a cloverleaf, to turn left, take the right turn just after the overpass; the road carries you around to join the cross road.
Turning before the overpass sends you the wrong way. The loop after it brings you around to the left.
To turn left, take the right turn just after the overpass.
At a diamond interchange, the right turn entrance ramp is reached before crossing over or under the interstate.
Missing that first ramp means you cross the interstate and find only the ramp for the other direction.
(1) The RIGHT TURN entrance ramp will always be encountered BEFORE crossing over or under the interstate.
At a diamond interchange, the left turn entrance ramp is reached after crossing over or under the interstate.
Turning left too soon puts you on an exit ramp, facing traffic coming off the interstate.
(2) The LEFT TURN entrance ramp will always be encountered AFTER crossing over or under the interstate.
At a weaving interchange, cars entering and exiting share the same lane and must yield to each other in a give-and-take way.
One car is speeding up while another slows down in the same lane. Without give and take, they collide.
This will require both you and the other driver to yield and share the interchange in an equal “give and take” manner.
On the test
Approaching an interchange you do not know, what should you go by?

How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
