Sharing the road with work zones — Tennessee Permit Test
Sharing the road with work zones on the Tennessee permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
If no reduced speed limit is posted in a work zone, obey the normal posted speed limit.
No lower sign does not mean no limit. The normal limit still applies, and workers may be only a few feet away.
The reduced speed limits are clearly posted within the work zone and if there are no reduced speed limit postings, drivers should obey the normal posted speed limit.
A car traveling 60 mph covers 88 feet every second.
At highway speed a work zone sign 1,500 feet ahead is only seconds away. You must slow down as soon as you see it.
A car traveling 60 M.P.H. travels 88 feet per second.
Turn on your headlights before you enter a work zone to be more visible to workers and other drivers.
Workers and flaggers are watching many things at once. Lights make your car stand out against dust and equipment.
Turn on your vehicle’s headlights to become more visible to workers and other motorists.
In a work zone, do not change lanes unless you are instructed to do so.
Lanes in a work zone shift and narrow without warning. Changing lanes there can put you into a closed lane or a worker.
Follow their signals, and don't change lanes within the work zone unless instructed to do so.
Most work zone crashes are rear-end collisions, so keep a safe distance and don't tailgate.
Traffic in a work zone stops suddenly for a flagger or a truck. A car too close behind has nowhere to go.
Most work zone accidents are caused by rear-end collisions.
Some work zones move, like line painting and mowing; obey the posted signs until you see the End Road Work sign.
Moving crews can be a mile past the first sign. Speeding up because no one is in sight puts you on top of them.
Observe the posted signs until you see the one that says “End Road Work”.
On the test
A work zone has no reduced speed limit posted. What limit applies?
The normal posted limit. No lower sign does not mean no limit. The normal limit still applies, and workers may be only a few feet away. Tennessee Comprehensive Driver License Manual, p.112: “The reduced speed limits are clearly posted within the work zone and if there are no reduced speed limit postings, drivers should obey the normal posted speed limit.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
