The rules

When police, fire, rescue vehicles or ambulances come up behind you with a siren or flashing lights, yield at once. Pull over to the right edge of the road and stop until they pass.

A crew is losing minutes on the way to somebody, and a driver who keeps rolling makes them wait behind a car that will not settle.

When an emergency vehicle comes toward you in the opposite lane on an undivided highway, pull over to the edge of the road and stop until it passes.

A crew coming the other way often has to use your side of the road to get past whatever is blocking theirs.

Never follow an emergency vehicle closer than 500 feet when its lights are flashing.

The vehicle stops without warning at a scene, and following it also puts you into a place nobody has made safe yet.

When you come up on a stopped emergency vehicle or tow truck with flashing lights, change to a lane that is not next to it if you can. If you cannot change lanes safely, slow down and pass with caution.

The crew is working in the lane beside their vehicle, and an empty lane between them and traffic is the only thing protecting them.

Failing to move over for a stopped emergency vehicle can lead to the court suspending your license and to demerit points on your record.

The penalty is heavy because the people it protects have nothing between them and the traffic but a painted line.

When passing a stationary trash collection vehicle on a road of fewer than four lanes, or when you cannot change lanes, slow to 10 miles per hour below the posted limit and pass at least two feet to the left of it.

You may not park within 500 feet of where fire trucks or equipment are stopped answering an alarm.

Crews run hose and set ladders well back from a building, and a parked car takes up the ground they need.

Somebody is standing beside a broken-down car in the dark, and the lane change is what keeps a mirror from catching them.

The move over requirements do not apply in highway work zones.

Work zones already have their own reduced speeds and lane patterns, and a car changing lanes there would cut across them.
