The rules
Three things decide how far your car needs to stop: perception time, reaction distance and braking distance.
Two of the three happen before the brake is touched, which is why a driver who is tired or distracted needs much more road.
Perception time is how long it takes you to recognize a hazard. Reaction distance is how far the car travels before you touch the brake.
The car keeps going at full speed through both of these, so anything that slows your thinking is measured in feet of road.
Wet pavement can double your braking distance.
Water between the tire and the road takes away much of the grip, and the brakes cannot use grip that is not there.
Braking distance is also affected by how fast you are going, the condition of your brakes and tires, and the state of the pavement.
Worn tires and old brakes cost you distance you never see until the one time you need all of it.
If your vehicle has antilock brakes, never pump them. Read the owner’s manual and practice braking before you need to do it on the road.
Antilock brakes pump themselves many times a second, and a foot lifting off the pedal stops them from doing the job.
