The rules
Using your turn signal is required by law whenever you plan to change lanes, turn, or enter or leave a highway.
The signal is the only way to tell a driver what you are about to do rather than what you have already done.
Signal even when no other traffic is on the road, so that signaling stays a habit rather than a decision.
The car you did not see is the reason the habit matters, and a driver who decides each time will get one of those decisions wrong.
The hand signal for a left turn is the left hand and arm pointing straight out.
Hand signals still matter when a bulb has failed, and the driver behind has no other way to know what you are doing.
The hand signal for a right turn is the left hand and arm pointing upward.
The signal is given from the left window because that is the side the driver behind can see.
The hand signal for slowing or stopping is the left hand and arm pointing downward.
A driver whose brake lights have failed has nothing else to warn the car behind with.
After you finish a turn or a lane change, make sure the turn signal has stopped flashing.
A signal left on tells everyone you are about to turn, so the next driver pulls out in front of a car that is not turning.
