Statutes fetched on 8 October 2026; manuals fetched on 14 September 2026. How the answers are made

How far from a fire hydrant must you park?

You may not park within 6 feet of a fire hydrant. A fire crew has to get a hose onto the hydrant in seconds, and a parked car makes that a job for a crowbar.

How far from a crosswalk at an intersection must you park?

May you park in or near an intersection?

You may not park on a sidewalk, within an intersection, on a crosswalk, on a bridge, in a tunnel, in front of a driveway, on a marked bicycle lane or in a marked disabled parking area. Every one of these is somebody else's route, and a parked car forces them out into traffic to get around it.

On a marked bicycle lane.

How far from a stop sign or traffic signal must you park?

You may not park within 30 feet of a flashing red or yellow light, a stop sign or a traffic light. Parking on top of a signal hides it from the driver who needs to read it while still far enough back to stop.

How far from a railroad crossing must you park?

You may not park on any railroad tracks, or within 50 feet of the nearest rail of a railroad crossing. A train needs the whole crossing and a good deal of the ground beside it, and it cannot swerve.

How far from a fire station driveway must you park?

You may not park within 20 feet of the driveway of a fire station, or across the street within 75 feet of that driveway where there are signs. An engine leaving a station needs the whole width of the street to swing out into.

How close to the curb must you park?

A vehicle parked on a two-lane road must have its right wheels within 12 inches of the right side of the road or curb, and it must face the same direction as the traffic flow. A car left sticking into the lane is a wall that traffic has to swerve around in the dark.

When must you stop for a school bus with flashing red lights?

Once the bus has stopped and the alternately flashing red warning lights are on, you must stop your vehicle. This applies even in a school yard. A school yard feels like private ground, and the children crossing there are the same children.

Remember, even in a school yard, you must not pass a stopped school bus with its alternately flashing red warning lights activated.

What must you do when passing a stopped emergency vehicle with flashing lights?

Approaching a law enforcement, emergency or repair vehicle with a flashing light at the side of the road, you must proceed with caution and change lanes away from it as soon as it is safe. If you cannot change lanes you must slow to 20 mph below the speed limit. Where the lane change is impossible the law still wants a margin, and it names the number rather than leaving it to a judgment call.

If you are unable to change lanes you must slow down to 20 mph below the speed limit in order to go by the stopped vehicles.

What is the legal blood alcohol limit for adult drivers?

Vermont law says a person whose blood alcohol concentration is .08 or above is under the influence, or impaired. It is the line at which the law stops arguing about how you seem and simply calls you impaired.

Vermont law states that when a person's blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is .08 or above, he/she is “under the influence” or “impaired”.

What is the blood alcohol limit for drivers under 21?

A person under 21 who drives with an alcohol concentration of .02 or more can receive a civil traffic violation, has their license suspended and must complete an alcohol and driving education program at their own expense. Under 21 the limit is set near zero, because there is no lawful drink to explain the reading.

May you use a handheld phone while driving?

It is against the law for drivers to read or send messages while driving, and against the law to use a portable electronic device while operating a motor vehicle on a public highway in Vermont, including while the vehicle is stationary. Stationary in traffic is still operating, so waiting at a light is not a gap in the law.

May you text while driving?

A person shall not use any portable electronic device while operating a motor vehicle. That covers reading and writing text messages, instant messages and emails on a phone, tablet or laptop. A message read at 50 mph costs you the length of a football field with nobody watching the road.

How far before a turn must you signal?

The law says a driver must use a turn signal not less than 100 feet before making a turn or changing lanes. Signaling 3 to 5 seconds before covers that. The distance is what the law measures, but nobody can pace out 100 feet while driving, so the seconds are the usable version.

May you turn right on a red light?

Right turns at circular red lights are usually allowed, but only after the driver has stopped completely, scanned the intersection and yielded to pedestrians and other vehicles. The turn is a favor the law does you, and it is conditional on a real stop and a real look.

(A) Vehicular traffic facing a steady circular red signal alone shall stop at a clearly marked stop line, but if none, shall stop before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection. (B) Except when a sign is in place prohibiting a turn, vehicular traffic facing any steady red signal may cautiously enter the intersection to turn right, or to turn left from a one way street into a one way street, after stopping as required by subdivision (A) of this subdivision (3). This traffic shall yield the right-of-way to pedestrians lawfully within an adjacent crosswalk and to other traffic lawfully using the intersection. No motorist shall turn right when facing a red arrow signal indication unless a regulatory sign is present that permits this movement.

Ask a question about Vermont road law

Easier than searching the manual: ask in your own words — how far from a fire hydrant you may park, when you must stop for a school bus — and the answer comes from 2025 Vermont Driver's Manual or Vermont’s code, with the page or the section it is in. When neither says, the answer says so rather than guess. Or tick Nationwide and compare every state on one question.
