Left turns — Wisconsin Permit Test

Left turns on the Wisconsin permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

A driver preparing a left turn keeps close to the center line.

Sitting near the middle leaves room for cars going straight to pass on your right. Sitting wide blocks them.

Keep close to the center line.

Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, p.14

A driver approaches an intersection slowly for a left turn and waits about halfway into the intersection.

Waiting out in the intersection is what lets you finish the turn when the light changes. Waiting behind the line strands you.

Slowly approach the intersection and wait about halfway in the intersection.

Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, p.14

A driver waiting to turn left keeps the steering wheel straight until it is safe to turn.

If a car hits you from behind with the wheel turned, you are pushed into oncoming traffic. Straight wheels send you forward instead.

If you turn your wheel to the left and someone hits you from behind, you will be pushed into oncoming traffic.

Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, p.14

A driver turning left checks for pedestrians crossing on the left.

People step off the curb on the side you are swinging toward. They are the last thing a driver watching for cars looks at.

Check for pedestrians crossing on the left.

Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, p.14

On the test

Where should a Wisconsin driver wait to make a left turn?

Close to the center line. Sitting near the middle leaves room for cars going straight to pass on your right. Sitting wide blocks them. Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, p.14: “Keep close to the center line.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
