Seat belts — Wisconsin Permit Test

Seat belts on the Wisconsin permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

Wisconsin law requires that a driver and their passengers wear seat belts at any age.

There is no age at which the belt stops mattering. The law covers everyone in the car, not just the front seats.

Wisconsin law requires that you and your passengers wear seat belts (safety belts) at any age.

Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, p.54

A seat belt must still be worn in a vehicle that has air bags.

An air bag is built to work with a belt, not instead of one. Unbelted, it meets you at the wrong speed and angle.

You still need to wear your seat belt even if your vehicle has air bags.

Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, p.54

The lap belt should fit snugly across the hip bones just under the stomach, and the shoulder belt across the chest.

Hip bones can take the load of a crash and a stomach cannot. A belt riding high does damage of its own.

The lap belt should fit snugly across your hip bones just under your stomach.

Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, p.55

A driver should never put the shoulder belt under the arm or leave it loose enough to hang over the arm.

A belt under the arm loads the ribs instead of the shoulder. Slack lets you move before it catches you at all.

Never put the shoulder belt under your arm or leave it so loose that it hangs over your arm.

On the test

Who must wear a seat belt in Wisconsin?

The driver and all passengers. There is no age at which the belt stops mattering. The law covers everyone in the car, not just the front seats. Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, p.54: “Wisconsin law requires that you and your passengers wear seat belts (safety belts) at any age.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
