Adverse conditions — West Virginia Permit Test
Adverse conditions on the West Virginia permit test — 10 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Rain is most dangerous at the start of a light shower, when oil, dirt and water form a slippery film on the road.
The most slippery moment comes before a driver has decided the weather is bad enough to slow down.
Partial hydroplaning begins at about 35 mph, and at 55 mph tires can ride entirely on the water.
On a film of water the tires stop touching the road, so the brakes, the wheel and the gas pedal all stop working at once.
Deep tread lets water escape from under the tires and helps prevent hydroplaning at normal highway speeds.
A worn tire has nowhere to put the water, so the same road that grips a new tire does not grip this one.
As little as six inches of water can float some smaller vehicles, and two feet will carry most vehicles away.
Flood water is judged by eye and gets it wrong, which is why so many drivers drive into it.
A driver should never attempt to drive across a flooded roadway, and should leave a vehicle that stalls in one and seek higher ground.
Flood water hides a road that may have washed away entirely, and a floating car rolls as it fills.
Stopping on snow or ice can take as much as 12 times the distance needed on dry pavement.
The distance grows by a factor most drivers never picture, which is why they follow far too closely.
Ice and snow may remain on bridges and overpasses when the rest of the pavement is clear.
A bridge freezes from above and below, so the ice arrives there first and leaves there last.
Braking on ice or packed snow should be gentle and smooth; without anti-lock brakes a driver pumps them to keep steering.
Locked wheels cannot steer, so a hard stab at the brakes trades the ability to avoid the obstacle for nothing.
In fog or dense smoke a driver should slow down, use low-beam headlights, and be ready for an emergency stop.
Fog hides a stopped line of vehicles until it is too close, and the only defense is arriving slower.
A driver who pulls off the road because of fog or smoke should leave the lights on and switch on the hazard flashers.
A dark car parked at the edge of a fog bank is the thing the next driver hits.
On the test
When is a wet road at its most slippery?
At the start of a light rain. The most slippery moment comes before a driver has decided the weather is bad enough to slow down.
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
