Impaired driving — West Virginia Permit Test

Impaired driving on the West Virginia permit test — 7 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

Time is the only thing that sobers a driver; coffee, fresh air, a cold shower and exercise do not.

Believing a remedy worked is what puts a drinker back behind the wheel while still impaired.

A one-ounce shot of 100-proof whiskey, a six-ounce glass of wine and a 12-ounce can of beer contain the same amount of alcohol.

Counting drinks by container hides the fact that a beer and a shot are the same dose to the bloodstream.

Blood alcohol keeps rising after the last drink, so a driver can be over the limit hours later.

A driver who stops drinking at midnight can be more impaired at 2 a.m., which is why "I stopped hours ago" is not a defense.

Prescription and over-the-counter drugs can cause drowsiness, loss of coordination and impaired driving.

A legal prescription impairs a driver exactly as an illegal drug does, and the label rarely gets read before a drive.

A designated driver is chosen before the drinking begins and does not drink during that time.

Choosing afterwards means choosing the least drunk person, which is not the same as choosing a sober one.

After about 18 hours awake, driving skill is comparable to that of a driver under the influence.

Fatigue is measurable impairment rather than mere tiredness, and a long day can produce it without a drink.

A drowsy driver should pull over somewhere safe and take a nap of 10 to 20 minutes.

A short nap restores enough alertness to finish a trip, and nothing else on the road does.

On the test

What actually lowers a driver’s blood alcohol level?

Time passing after the last drink. Believing a remedy worked is what puts a drinker back behind the wheel while still impaired.

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
