Alaska license exemptions — Alaska Permit Test
Alaska license exemptions on the Alaska permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
A non-resident with a valid license from another state or country may drive in Alaska, but must get an Alaska license by the end of 90 days after entering the state.
A visitor can drive on a home license for a short stay, but someone who stays on becomes an Alaska driver held to Alaska's own record.
However, an Alaska driver’s license must be obtained by the end of a 90-day period after entry into the state.
A non-resident is exempt from needing an Alaska license only if at least 16 years of age and holding a valid license from another state or country.
Alaska will not let a visitor drive at an age it would not license its own residents, whatever the home state allows.
A non-resident who is at least 16 years of age and has in their possession a valid driver’s license issued by another state or country.
A U.S. armed forces member, and a spouse over 18, holding a valid license from the state where they keep permanent residence are exempt, but the member's other dependents must get an Alaska license.
The exemption covers the service member and spouse posted here for duty; children who drive here are treated like any other Alaska driver.
A member of the armed forces of the United States, and their spouse who is over the age of 18, who has a valid driver’s license issued by another state, and who maintains permanent residence in that state.
A person driving farm equipment that is only temporarily driven or moved on a highway does not need an Alaska driver's license.
Moving a tractor briefly between fields is farm work, not travel, so the law does not demand a license for that short hop.

A United States Government employee operating a United States Government vehicle on official business is exempt from needing an Alaska license.
The federal government licenses and answers for its own drivers on official duty, so the state does not license them for that work.
An employee of the United States Government while operating a United States Government vehicle on official business.
On the test
A non-resident with a valid out-of-state license may drive in Alaska for how long after entering before an Alaska license is needed?
90 days. A visitor can drive on a home license for a short stay, but someone who stays on becomes an Alaska driver held to Alaska's own record. Alaska Driver Manual, p.6: “However, an Alaska driver’s license must be obtained by the end of a 90-day period after entry into the state.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
