School bus stopping — Alaska Permit Test

School bus stopping on the Alaska permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

In Alaska, a driver approaching a school bus from the rear may not pass it when its red lights are flashing and must come to a complete stop before reaching it when it is stopped.

Children get off and cross in front of a stopped bus, out of sight of the cars behind it.

Drivers approaching a school bus from the rear may not pass the school bus when red signal lights are flashing and shall bring their vehicles to a complete stop before reaching the school bus when it is stopped.

Alaska Driver Manual, p.53

A driver stopped behind a school bus stays stopped until the stop sign is retracted, the flashing red lights are discontinued and the bus resumes motion, or until the bus driver signals to proceed.

A child may still be crossing after the doors close, so you wait until the bus itself moves or the driver waves you on.

The vehicles shall remain stopped until the stop sign is retracted, the flashing red lights are discontinued, and the school bus resumes motion, or until signaled by the driver to proceed.

Alaska Driver Manual, p.53

When a school bus's yellow/amber warning lights are flashing, approaching drivers must reduce speed, and must stop completely when the bus stops, red lights flash and the stop sign is extended.

Amber lights mean the bus is about to stop for children, so slowing now lets you stop in time.

Drivers approaching a school bus on which the yellow/amber warning signal lights are flashing shall reduce the speed of their vehicles and shall bring the vehicle to a complete stop when school bus stops, red lights flash, and stop sign is extended.

Alaska Driver Manual, p.53

A driver meeting a stopped school bus from the opposite direction stays stopped until its stop sign is retracted and the red lights are discontinued, then may proceed with due caution.

Children cross the road in front of the bus toward the far side, right into the path of oncoming cars.

The vehicles shall remain stopped until stop sign is retracted and the red lights are discontinued after which they may proceed with due caution.

Alaska Driver Manual, p.53

On a highway with separated roadways and two or more lanes in each direction, a driver need not stop for a school bus headed in the opposite direction, even when it is stopped with its stop arm out and red lights flashing.

Children are not let off to cross a divided highway, so oncoming traffic on the far roadway is not in their path.

Driver upon a highway with separated roadways providing two or more lanes in each direction need not stop when approaching a school bus which is headed in the opposite direction even though the bus is stopped, and the stop arm is extended and the red flashing lights are activated.

On the test

You come up behind a stopped school bus with its red signal lights flashing. What must you do?

Stop completely before reaching the bus. Children get off and cross in front of a stopped bus, out of sight of the cars behind it. Alaska Driver Manual, p.53: “Drivers approaching a school bus from the rear may not pass the school bus when red signal lights are flashing and shall bring their vehicles to a complete stop before reaching the school bus when it is stopped.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
