License exemptions — Alabama Permit Test

License exemptions on the Alabama permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

A non-resident with a valid license from their previous state may drive without an Alabama license for 30 days after becoming an Alabama resident.

A new resident needs a little time to get to a license office, but not so long that they keep driving on another state's card for good.

A non-resident who has a valid driver license from the state of previous residence may drive without an Alabama license for 30 days after becoming a resident of the state.

Alabama Driver Manual, p.5

A non-resident at least 16 whose home country does not license drivers may drive in Alabama for no more than 90 days in a calendar year, if the vehicle is registered in that country for the current year.

A visitor from a country with no license to show is allowed a short stay, so a long stay without any license is not possible.

A non-resident at least 16 years old whose home country does not require licensing of drivers may operate a motor vehicle as a driver of not more than 90 days in any calendar year, if the vehicle operated is duly registered for the current year in the home country of the non-resident.

Alabama Driver Manual, p.5

A non-resident full-time student enrolled at a school, college, university or trade school in Alabama may drive on a valid license from their home state or country.

A student here for school still lives somewhere else, so the license from home keeps covering them while they study.

Any non-resident full time student properly enrolled and registered in a school, college, university, or trade school in this state, who holds a valid license from his home state or country.

Alabama Driver Manual, p.5

Military personnel from other states and their families stationed in Alabama may drive on a valid license from their home state, even if the assignment is a long one.

Service members are moved where they are needed, so the license from their home state stays good for as long as the posting lasts.

This includes military personnel from other states and their families stationed in Alabama, even though their assignment in Alabama may be of long duration.

On the test

After you become an Alabama resident, how long may you drive on the valid license from your previous state?

30 days. A new resident needs a little time to get to a license office, but not so long that they keep driving on another state's card for good. Alabama Driver Manual, p.5: “A non-resident who has a valid driver license from the state of previous residence may drive without an Alabama license for 30 days after becoming a resident of the state.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
