Left turn lane positions — Arizona Permit Test
Left turn lane positions on the Arizona permit test — 7 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
For a left turn on a two-way road, approach the turn in the lane just to the right of the center line.
From there you cross the fewest lanes and oncoming drivers can see what you are doing.
On a two-way road, approach the turn with your car in the lane just to the right of the center line.
On a left turn onto a two-way road, turn just left of the center point of the intersection and enter the lane just right of the center line.
Cutting the corner puts you in the lane of cars waiting to come out. The right path avoids them.
Enter the lane just to the right of the center line.
If a special lane for making left turns has been signed or marked, use that lane and do not turn left from any other lane.
Cars in the next lane expect to go straight. Turning left across them from the wrong lane is a side crash.
If a special lane for making left turns has been signed or marked, use that lane – do not turn left from any other lane.
To turn left from a one-way road onto a one-way road, approach in the lane nearest the left curb and turn into the extreme left lane.
Starting and ending on the left keeps you out of the lanes other cars are using.
Approach with your car in the traffic lane nearest the left curb.
A left turn from a one-way road onto a one-way road is the only left turn you may make against a red light, after stopping and yielding, unless signs prohibit it.
Only here does a left turn cross no oncoming lane. Any other left on red drives across cars coming at you.
This is the only left turn situation where, unless signs prohibit it, you may make the turn against a red light after stopping and yielding to traffic and pedestrians.
Turning left from a two-way road onto a one-way road, approach just right of the center line and turn into the extreme left lane.
The left lane of the one-way road is the one nearest you. Taking it keeps you clear of right-turning cars.
As you enter the intersection, turn into the extreme left lane of the road you are entering.
A left turn from a one-way road onto a two-way road cannot be made against a red light.
On a two-way road cars come toward you. Turning on red would cross their path.
This turn cannot be made against a red light.
On the test
On a two-way road, where should your car be as you approach a left turn?
Just right of the center line. From there you cross the fewest lanes and oncoming drivers can see what you are doing. Arizona Driver License Manual and Customer Service Guide, p.47: “On a two-way road, approach the turn with your car in the lane just to the right of the center line.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
