Open container — Arizona Permit Test

Open container on the Arizona permit test — 3 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

It is illegal for a driver or passenger to drink from or have an open container of liquor in the passenger compartment of a vehicle on any public road.

An open drink within reach invites drinking on the road, and the law does not care which seat it is in.

It is illegal for a driver or passenger to consume or possess an open container of spirituous liquor in the passenger compartment of a motor vehicle while on any public roadway.

Arizona Driver License Manual and Customer Service Guide, p.59

Passengers riding in a bus, limousine, taxi or the living area of a motor home are exempt from the open container rule.

These riders are not up front with the driver, so the law leaves them out. In an ordinary car, it does not.

Passengers riding in a bus, limousine, taxi or the living area of a motor home are exempt.

Arizona Driver License Manual and Customer Service Guide, p.59

The passenger compartment does not include the trunk, or the area behind the last upright seat in a vehicle without a trunk.

An open bottle has to be out of reach. The trunk is the legal place for it, not the glove box or a bag on the seat.

It does not include the trunk or the area behind the last upright seat of a vehicle not equipped with a trunk.

On the test

Who may not have an open container of liquor in a vehicle's passenger compartment on a public road?

The driver or any passenger. An open drink within reach invites drinking on the road, and the law does not care which seat it is in. Arizona Driver License Manual and Customer Service Guide, p.59: “It is illegal for a driver or passenger to consume or possess an open container of spirituous liquor in the passenger compartment of a motor vehicle while on any public roadway.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
