Recovering from skids — Arizona Permit Test
Recovering from skids on the Arizona permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Driving on a slippery surface or braking too sharply can throw your vehicle into a skid.
Tires can only grip so much. Asking them to stop too fast, or on a wet road, uses up that grip.
Driving on a slippery roadway surface or braking too sharply can throw your vehicle into a skid.
In a skid, do not press on the brake any further, because it will only make the skid worse.
Braking takes away the grip the tires need to steer. The car keeps sliding the way it is going.
Do not press on the brake any further; this will only make the skid worse.
In a skid, turn the wheel quickly in the direction you want your vehicle to go, which is the direction of the skid.
Pointing the front wheels where you want to go lets them grip again and pull the car back into line.
Turn the wheel quickly in the direction you want your vehicle to follow (in the direction of the skid).
As the car begins to straighten out of a skid, turn the wheel quickly back the other way so it does not skid in the opposite direction.
If you hold the wheel turned, the back of the car swings past center and starts a new skid the other way.
As the car begins to straighten out, turn the wheel quickly back the other way so your vehicle does not skid in the opposite direction.
Keep turning the wheel back and forth as needed until the vehicle straightens to its normal path.
One correction is rarely enough. Small back-and-forth moves bring the car fully back under control.
Continue turning the wheel back and forth as necessary until your vehicle straightens to its normal path.
On the test
Which way should you turn the wheel when your car skids?
In the direction you want to go. Pointing the front wheels where you want to go lets them grip again and pull the car back into line. Arizona Driver License Manual and Customer Service Guide, p.70: “Turn the wheel quickly in the direction you want your vehicle to follow (in the direction of the skid).”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
