Supervised driving practice — Arizona Permit Test

Supervised driving practice on the Arizona permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

Before a graduated license, a teen must finish an MVD-approved driver education program, or a parent or guardian must certify in writing at least 30 hours of supervised driving practice, including at least 10 hours at night, or 20 hours with at least 6 at night if the teen completed Traffic Survival School or a Defensive Driving course.

Most teen crashes happen early, before the new driver has seen much. Practice hours with an adult are how that experience is built.

An applicant must also have satisfactorily completed an Arizona driver education program approved by MVD or the parent or guardian must certify in writing that the applicant either has completed at least 30 hours of supervised driving practice, including at least 10 hours at night, or 20 hours of supervised driving practice with at least six (6 hours at night if the minor completed a Traffic Survival School or Defensive Driving course.

Of the 30 hours of supervised driving practice, at least 10 hours must be at night.

Headlights show less of the road, and glare hides people on foot. A teen who has only driven by day meets that alone the first time.

If the teen completed a Traffic Survival School or Defensive Driving course, the parent may instead certify 20 hours of supervised practice, with at least 6 hours at night.

A course covers some of what the road would teach. Arizona lowers the practice hours for a teen who has taken one.

The supervised driving practice hours must be certified in writing by a parent or guardian.

MVD does not ride along for the practice hours. The parent’s signed word is what vouches that they happened.

On the test

Without driver education, Traffic Survival School or a Defensive Driving course, how many hours of supervised practice must a parent certify for a graduated license?

At least 30 hours. Most teen crashes happen early, before the new driver has seen much. Practice hours with an adult are how that experience is built. Arizona Driver License Manual and Customer Service Guide, p.13: “An applicant must also have satisfactorily completed an Arizona driver education program approved by MVD or the parent or guardian must certify in writing that the applicant either has completed at least 30 hours of supervised driving practice, including at least 10 hours at night, or 20 hours of supervised driving practice with at least six (6 hours at night if the minor completed a Traffic Survival School or Defensive Driving course.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
