Administrative hearings — California Permit Test
Administrative hearings on the California permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
If DMV notifies you of a proposed action against your driving privilege, you must request a hearing within 10 days of being served, or 14 days from the date the notice was mailed.
Miss the date and the right disappears, whatever the case would have been.
If you received notification that a proposed action is being taken against your driving privilege, you must request a hearing within 10 days of being served or 14 days from the date the notice is mailed.
If you do not request a hearing in time, your right to a hearing is lost.
Nothing reminds you a second time, and the action goes ahead without you.
If you do not make a timely request, your right to a hearing will be lost.
Any action taken by the court is independent of the action taken by DMV, and you may have to appear in court for the same reason as the DMV hearing.
Winning one does not settle the other, because they are asking different questions.
Any action taken by the court is independent of the action taken by DMV.
At a hearing you have the right to present relevant evidence and witnesses on your behalf.
It is your side of it, and evidence is the only form the hearing will accept it in.
Present relevant evidence and witnesses on your behalf.
You may testify on your own behalf or be represented by an attorney or other representative at your own expense, and representation by an attorney is not required.
You can do it yourself. Nobody has to pay for a lawyer to be heard.
Testify on your behalf or be represented by an attorney or other representative at your expense.
DMV bases its case only on written documents, and if you wish to question someone who prepared or is listed on a document used as evidence, it is your responsibility to get a subpoena.
The person who wrote the report will not be there unless you make arrangements for it.

On the test
How long do you have to request a hearing after being served notice?
10 days. Miss the date and the right disappears, whatever the case would have been. California Driver’s Handbook, p.55: “If you received notification that a proposed action is being taken against your driving privilege, you must request a hearing within 10 days of being served or 14 days from the date the notice is mailed.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
