Minors and license actions — California Permit Test
Minors and license actions on the California permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
DMV may restrict or suspend a minor’s driving privilege for collisions or traffic violations within the first 12 months of holding their driver’s license.
The first year is the one where a new driver is most likely to have the collision.
If you get into collisions or commit traffic violations within the first 12 months of obtaining your minor’s driver’s license, DMV may restrict or suspend your driving privilege.
A minor with two at fault collisions, two traffic violation convictions, or one of each may not drive for 30 days unless a licensed adult at least 25 years old rides with them.
It is a month of supervised driving rather than none, which keeps the practice going.
Two at fault collisions, two traffic violation convictions, or one of each:
A minor with three at fault collisions, three traffic violation convictions, or a combination has their driving privilege suspended for six months and is on probation for one year.
Three in a year is a pattern rather than bad luck, and the state treats it as one.
Three at fault collisions, three traffic violation convictions, or a combination:
If a minor has more at fault collisions or traffic violation convictions while on probation, their license will be suspended again.
Probation is the state watching, and the second suspension is what it is watching for.
If you have more at fault collisions or traffic violation convictions while on probation, your license will be suspended again.
A driver aged 15 to 20 convicted of using alcohol or a controlled substance will have their driving privilege suspended for one year, or their eligibility to apply delayed.
If you have no license yet, the clock starts on the license you have not got.
A conviction of using alcohol or a controlled substance, or both and are 15-20 years old:
Turning 18 years old does not erase or end existing restrictions, suspensions or probation sentences.
The birthday changes the license, not the penalties already sitting against it.
NOTE: Turning 18 years old does not erase or end existing restrictions,
On the test
Which period counts for a minor’s collisions and violations?
The first 12 months with the license. The first year is the one where a new driver is most likely to have the collision. California Driver’s Handbook, p.55: “If you get into collisions or commit traffic violations within the first 12 months of obtaining your minor’s driver’s license, DMV may restrict or suspend your driving privilege.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
