Entering the freeway — Colorado Permit Test
Entering the freeway on the Colorado permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
When entering a freeway from an on-ramp, try to increase your speed to match freeway traffic.
Joining slowly is what forces everybody in the through lane to brake. The acceleration lane exists to give you the speed you need.

Before entering a highway from a side entrance ramp, signal properly, look for an opening in traffic, accelerate to the speed of traffic and merge when it is safe.
Four things in order, and doing them out of order is what makes a merge frightening. Looking for the gap while still slow is the common mistake.
Before entering a highway from a side entrance ramp, signal properly, look for an opening in traffic, accelerate to the speed of traffic and merge into traffic when it is safe
Do not merge into freeway traffic until the solid white line has ended, and do not stop in the acceleration lane unless it is absolutely necessary.
The solid line marks the stretch where a merge would cross somebody’s path. Stopping in the lane leaves you with no speed and no room.

You must yield the right-of-way to freeway traffic when entering from a ramp.
Traffic already on the freeway cannot see the end of your ramp coming. Fitting in is your job and it is why you accelerate first.
Remember, you must yield the right-of-way to freeway traffic
On metered freeway entrance ramps you must stop and wait to be released on a green light before entering the freeway.
The meter spaces cars out so the merge lane is never full. Running it puts two cars into the same gap.

On the test
What speed should you reach on a freeway on-ramp?
The speed of the traffic on the freeway. Joining slowly is what forces everybody in the through lane to brake. The acceleration lane exists to give you the speed you need. Colorado Driver Handbook, p.14: “When entering a freeway from an on-ramp, try to increase your speed to match freeway traffic”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
