Freeway driving — Colorado Permit Test
Freeway driving on the Colorado permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Drive in the rightmost lane when you are driving slower than the normal speed on a freeway.
Keeping slower traffic right means faster traffic never has to weave. A slow car in a fast lane creates the passing it was trying to avoid.

The passing lane, the leftmost lane, is reserved for passing vehicles in non-passing lanes, for left turns, and for conditions where traffic volume does not allow merging into the other lanes.
A car sitting in the left lane at the limit blocks the only lane built for passing. The rest of the traffic then passes on the right, which is where the danger is.

Move over on a freeway, where it is safe to do so, when approaching a merge area, to make room for vehicles entering the freeway.
A car on the ramp has a fixed length of road to get up to speed. Making a lane available is cheaper for you than for them.

Signal at least 200 feet before you change lanes on a freeway, and avoid frequent lane changes.
Each lane change is a fresh chance to miss somebody in a blind spot. Doing fewer of them is as important as signaling for each one.

Do not drive across, over or within any median or island on a freeway.
A median is what keeps the two directions apart. Crossing it is the way a single mistake becomes a head-on collision.

On the test
Which freeway lane should slower traffic use?
The rightmost lane. Keeping slower traffic right means faster traffic never has to weave. A slow car in a fast lane creates the passing it was trying to avoid. Colorado Driver Handbook, p.14: “Drive in the rightmost lane when you are driving slower than the normal speed”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
