Approaching emergency vehicles — Delaware Permit Test
Approaching emergency vehicles on the Delaware permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
When an emergency vehicle with a siren or flashing lights approaches, Delaware requires every other vehicle to yield and drive to the right-hand edge or curb, clear of intersections, until it has passed.
An ambulance stuck behind a car that will not move loses minutes a patient may not have.
every other vehicle shall yield the right-of-way and shall immediately drive to the right-hand edge or curb of the roadway clear of any intersections until the authorized emergency vehicle has passed, except when otherwise directed by a police officer.
If you are in an intersection when an emergency vehicle approaches, drive through the intersection before you pull over.
A car that stops in the middle of an intersection blocks the very path the fire truck needs.
If you are in an intersection, drive through the intersection before you pull over.
Delaware's law on yielding to approaching emergency vehicles extends to DelDOT vehicle operators who support fire and police at an incident.
A DelDOT crew racing to close a lane at a crash needs the same open road as the police.
This law extends to DelDOT vehicle operators (who are requested to provide support to fire and police at the incident scene).
When an emergency vehicle approaches, follow any instructions given over its loudspeaker.
An officer who calls out "pull to the left" knows where the road ahead is blocked.
Follow any instructions given over the emergency vehicle’s loudspeaker.
On the test
An ambulance with its siren on comes up behind you. What does Delaware law require?
Pull right and wait until it passes. An ambulance stuck behind a car that will not move loses minutes a patient may not have. Delaware Driver Manual, p.82: “every other vehicle shall yield the right-of-way and shall immediately drive to the right-hand edge or curb of the roadway clear of any intersections until the authorized emergency vehicle has passed, except when otherwise directed by a police officer.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
