Special license types — Delaware Permit Test

Special license types on the Delaware permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

A holder of a valid Class D license who is temporarily out of state may be issued a temporary license, as long as their license is not suspended, revoked or otherwise withdrawn.

A driver away from home when the license expires would be stranded without a legal way to drive.

When temporarily out-of-state, a temporary license may be issued to the holder of a valid Class D operator’s license to extend the expiration date, to replace a lost license, or in lieu of the Class D licensing document, as long as the driver license holder is not suspended, revoked, disqualified, cancelled, or denied in this state or any other state.

Delaware Driver Manual, p.38

A Delaware temporary license is a one-time license issued for no more than six months.

A temporary license with no end date would let a driver skip renewal and its eye screening for good.

This one-time temporary license is issued for a period not to exceed six months.

Delaware Driver Manual, p.39

Conditional, occupational and hardship licenses grant limited driving privileges, and those limits are defined on the license itself.

A driver allowed only to drive to work who guesses at the limits may drive somewhere the law does not allow.

The limited driving privileges granted are defined on the license.

Delaware Driver Manual, p.39

A Delaware ignition interlock (IID) license allows full Class D driving privileges only in a vehicle equipped with an ignition interlock device.

A driver who borrows a car without the device would be driving with nothing to stop a drunk start.

only when the vehicle is equipped with an ignition interlock device.

On the test

When may a Delaware Class D holder be issued a temporary license?

When temporarily out of state. A driver away from home when the license expires would be stranded without a legal way to drive. Delaware Driver Manual, p.38: “When temporarily out-of-state, a temporary license may be issued to the holder of a valid Class D operator’s license to extend the expiration date, to replace a lost license, or in lieu of the Class D licensing document, as long as the driver license holder is not suspended, revoked, disqualified, cancelled, or denied in this state or any other state.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
