Required vehicle equipment — Florida Permit Test
Required vehicle equipment on the Florida permit test — 9 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Low beam headlights must show objects 150 feet ahead, and high beams must show objects 450 feet ahead. Both must be visible from 1,000 feet.
A low beam that reaches 150 feet is why you cannot safely outdrive it on a dark road.
Low Beam Headlights Show objects 150 feet ahead. Visible from 1,000 feet.
High beam headlights must show objects 450 feet ahead.
That is roughly a city block and a half, which is what you get back by switching them on.
High Beam Headlights Show objects 450 feet ahead. Visible from 1,000 feet.
A car must have two red brake lights visible from 300 feet in the daytime.
Three hundred feet in daylight is about the distance the car behind needs to stop.
Brake Lights Two red brake lights. Visible from 300 feet in the daytime.
Directional signals must be visible from 500 feet.
A signal nobody can see from far enough back is the same as no signal at all.
Directional Signals Amber; or white (front) or red (rear). Visible from 500 feet.
The horn must be heard from a distance of 200 feet, and there must be at least one rear-view mirror giving a view 200 feet to the rear.
Both are set at 200 feet, which is about the length of half a block.
Horn Heard from a distance of 200 feet.
The white license plate light must make the plate visible from 50 feet.
A plate nobody can read at night is a car nobody can identify at night.
License Plate Light White light that makes the license plate visible from 50 feet.
Tires should have a minimum tread of at least 3/32 of an inch, with no worn spots showing the ply.
Tread is what carries water out from under the tire, and bald tires float instead.
Tires Should have a minimum tread of at least 3/32 of an inch or greater, and no worn spots showing the ply.
A car must have two braking systems, each able to stop the car alone, and the parking brake must hold the car on any hill.
One system failing on a hill is exactly the moment the second one has to work.
Brakes Two braking systems. Each must be able to stop the car alone.
Side windows may not reflect more than 25% of the light, and the rear window may not reflect more than 35%.
Mirrored glass hides the driver, and the driver is who another road user is trying to read.
Side & Rear Windows* May not be composed of, covered by, or treated with any material which has a mirrored appearance or reflects more than 25% of the light (side windows) or more than 35% of the light (rear window).
On the test
How far ahead must low beam headlights show objects?
150 feet ahead. A low beam that reaches 150 feet is why you cannot safely outdrive it on a dark road. Official Florida Driver License Handbook, p.38: “Low Beam Headlights Show objects 150 feet ahead. Visible from 1,000 feet.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
