Equipment that is not allowed — Florida Permit Test

Equipment that is not allowed on the Florida permit test — 6 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

Red lights visible from the front, and blue lights, are for emergency and law enforcement vehicles only.

Those two colors mean get out of the way, and they only work while nobody else uses them.

Red lights visible from front or blue lights. For emergency/law enforcement vehicles only.

Official Florida Driver License Handbook, p.38

A car may not carry more than two spotlights, cowl or fender lights, fog lights or other extra lights.

Past two, extra lights stop helping you see and start stopping other drivers seeing.

More than two spotlights, cowl or fender lights, fog lights, or other extra lights.

A siren, bell or whistle is not permitted equipment on an ordinary vehicle.

A siren on a private car sends other drivers scattering for no reason at all.

A siren, bell, or whistle.

A very loud muffler, heard from more than 50 feet, or one that emits smoke, is not permitted.

Fifty feet is the line: past it, the exhaust is a nuisance the law will stop you for.

A very loud muffler (heard from more than 50 feet) or one that emits smoke.

Official Florida Driver License Handbook, p.38

Signs, posters and stickers are not permitted on the windshield or windows unless the law requires them.

Every sticker is a piece of the road you cannot see through.

Signs, posters, or stickers on the windshield or windows (except if required by law).

A television-type receiver the driver can see, and headsets or headphones worn by the driver, are not permitted.

A screen takes your eyes and headphones take your ears, and driving needs both.

Headsets/headphones worn by driver while operating a vehicle.

On the test

Which lights may only emergency and law enforcement vehicles show?

Red showing forward, and blue in any direction. Those two colors mean get out of the way, and they only work while nobody else uses them. Official Florida Driver License Handbook, p.38: “Red lights visible from front or blue lights. For emergency/law enforcement vehicles only.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
