Emergency vehicles — Georgia Permit Test
Emergency vehicles on the Georgia permit test — 3 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
When an emergency vehicle is running its lights and siren you slow down and move over to the shoulder, or as far right as you can get, and stop.
The crew needs one clear lane, and they can only plan for it if every driver does the same thing.
If emergency vehicles are using their emergency lights (blue or red) and sirens, safely maneuver your vehicle out of their way. You should slow your vehicle and move over to the shoulder of the road, or if that is not possible, as far to the right of the roadway or lane as you can, and stop.
Pulling over for an emergency vehicle, you must not stop where you block an intersection or keep the emergency vehicle from making a turn it needs.
A car parked across the mouth of a street can hold up the truck it was trying to help.
Do not position your vehicle so that it blocks an intersection or otherwise prevents the emergency vehicle from making a necessary turn
Unless you are on official business you may not follow a fire truck answering an alarm closer than 200 feet, or park within 500 feet of one that has stopped at an alarm.
Crews run hoses across the street at a fire, and a parked car pins them where they are.
The driver of any vehicle, other than one on official business, must not follow any fire fighting apparatus traveling in response to a fire alarm, or other emergency vehicles, closer than 200 feet, or park any vehicle within 500 feet of any fire apparatus stopped in answer to a fire alarm.
On the test
An emergency vehicle is behind you with lights and siren going. What do you do?
Slow, pull as far right as you can, and stop. The crew needs one clear lane, and they can only plan for it if every driver does the same thing. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.45: “If emergency vehicles are using their emergency lights (blue or red) and sirens, safely maneuver your vehicle out of their way. You should slow your vehicle and move over to the shoulder of the road, or if that is not possible, as far to the right of the roadway or lane as you can, and stop.”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
