Georgia Permit Practice Test — DDS Written Test, 40 Questions

Free 10-question Georgia permit practice test, then full 40-question tests like the DDS exam, in 2 parts, each question cited to the Georgia Driver's Manual.

The exam

The Georgia Department of Driver Services knowledge test is 40 questions in 2 parts — 20 road signs, 15 right; 20 road rules, 15 right — and every part has to be passed. Everything on it comes out of Georgia Driver's Manual. Officially it is the knowledge test; most people call it the written test, or the permit test.

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

Ask a question about Georgia road law

Easier than searching the manual: ask in your own words — how far from a fire hydrant you may park, when you must stop for a school bus — and the answer comes from Georgia Driver's Manual, with the page it is on. When the manual does not say, the answer says so rather than guess. Or tick Nationwide and compare every state on one question.

Questions from the Georgia test

What must you do when you reach this sign?

Come to a full stop at the stop line. A rolling stop spends the one second you had to look for whatever is coming. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.70: “An Octagon (eight-sided shape) always means stop. When you come to it, you must make a complete stop at a marked stop line.”

You see this sign facing you on a ramp. What has happened?

You are about to drive against one-way traffic. Everything on that road is coming at you at full speed, and neither side has room to swerve. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.73: “You are approaching a one-way highway or ramp. Driving on the highway or ramp in the direction you are traveling is not allowed.”

What is ahead when you pass this sign?

A stop sign you will have to stop at. A stop that comes as a surprise is a stop you take late, into the intersection. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.85: “There is a stop sign ahead. Begin to slow down and be prepared to stop.”

What is ahead when you pass this sign?

A school zone or a school crossing. Children step off a curb without checking, and the sign is the only warning you get. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.73: “Pentagon shaped signs mean you are approaching a school zone and/or school crossing.”

What lies a short way ahead of this sign?

A place where tracks cross the road. A train needs a mile to stop, so the whole of the stopping is left to you. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.72: “This sign is posted a few hundred feet in front of the tracks and alerts you to slow down, look, listen and prepare to stop.”

What is this sign warning you about?

Work going on in the road ahead. A work zone changes from week to week, so the sign is the only current map of it you get. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.87: “Warning signs for construction and maintenance projects are used to alert you to dangers ahead and give you enough time to adjust your speed accordingly. These signs are orange with black markings.”

What does the letter on this sign point you toward?

A hospital somewhere nearby. You are looking for a hospital at the worst moment to be reading a road map. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.88: “Camping, hospital and picnic area signs”

What is the job of the sign shown?

Telling you the way to a place you want. A driver hunting for a turn is not watching the road, so the sign is there to end the hunting early. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.90: “Guide signs may indicate what road you are on, and how to get to your destination.”

How many basic sign shapes does Georgia say it uses?

Seven. At a distance you can make out a shape long before you can read a word on it. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.70: “The State of Georgia uses seven basic shapes of signs to convey traffic control instructions.”

What does a steady red light require of a driver?

A full stop before the crosswalk. The cross traffic has a green at that moment, and it is not slowing down for anybody. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.93: “A red light means you must make a complete stop before entering the crosswalk or intersection and wait until the light turns to green before proceeding.”

What does a steady WALK signal tell a person on foot?

Leave the curb and cross the street. The signal is the only thing telling a walker that the turning traffic has been held for them. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.97: “Leave the curb to cross the street.”

Where does Georgia say you stop when a stop line is painted?

At the painted line itself. The line is set back so that the drivers crossing in front of you have room to get by. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.100: “Drivers must come to a complete stop at the stop line, when present, not at the actual stop sign or traffic signal.”

Who has the right of way as you reach a roundabout?

The traffic already in the circle. Traffic in the circle has nowhere to go if you pull out in front of it, because the curb is on its other side. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.103: “You must yield to other traffic that is already in the roundabout. You will always enter a roundabout to the right, and continue circling until you have reached the roadway onto which you want to turn.”

Two cars reach an unmarked intersection at the same moment. Who yields?

The driver on the left yields. With nothing painted or posted, the two drivers need one rule they both already know. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.44: “At intersections where there are no stop signs, yield signs or other traffic signals, if two vehicles come to the intersection at the same time, the driver of the vehicle on the left must yield to the driver of the vehicle on the right”

An emergency vehicle is behind you with lights and siren going. What do you do?

Slow, pull as far right as you can, and stop. The crew needs one clear lane, and they can only plan for it if every driver does the same thing. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.45: “If emergency vehicles are using their emergency lights (blue or red) and sirens, safely maneuver your vehicle out of their way. You should slow your vehicle and move over to the shoulder of the road, or if that is not possible, as far to the right of the roadway or lane as you can, and stop.”

A school bus ahead of you switches on flashing yellow lights. What do they mean?

It is about to stop for children. The yellow lights are the warning; by the time the red ones come on the children are already moving. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.45: “When a school bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children, the driver of the bus will activate flashing yellow lights. When these flashing yellow lights are activated, all drivers approaching the school bus should slow down and be prepared to stop.”

How do you know from the paint that you are not in a passing zone?

The line nearest your lane is solid. The line nearest you is the one painted for your lane, and the other one is not talking to you. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.45: “A passing zone is indicated by striped lines to the right of the center line of the roadway. If the line nearest your vehicle is solid, you are not in a passing zone.”

How close to a railroad crossing does Georgia ban passing on a two-lane road?

Within 100 feet of it. A crossing hides a train behind whatever is beside the track, and you are on the wrong side of the road. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.46: “Within 100 feet of a railroad crossing”

What does the Slow Poke Law require of a slower driver?

Move out of the passing lane to the right. A car sitting in the passing lane makes everybody behind it pass on the right, which is the dangerous side. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.47: “Slower drivers must move out of the passing lane (most left-hand lanes) and over to the right to allow faster-moving traffic to proceed.”

What is the general speed limit in a Georgia urban or residential district?

30 miles per hour. Streets where people live have cars pulling out and children between them, and 30 is what leaves you time. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.47: “30 miles per hour in any urban or residential district”

Where does Georgia require you to stop at a railroad crossing?

Within 50 feet, but no closer than 15 feet. Stopping any closer puts your hood inside the swing of a train, which is wider than the rail. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.48: “You must always stop within 50 feet, but not less than 15 feet, from the nearest rail of a railroad crossing when any of the following apply”

What color background does Georgia use for warning signs in a work zone?

An orange one behind black markings. The color is what you notice first at speed, before you have read a single word on the sign. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.50: “Warning signs in work zones have an orange background and black letters or symbols.”

When must a Georgia driver give a turn signal?

For every turn, well before making it. A signal given as you start to turn tells the driver behind what you are doing, not what you will do. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.52: “A turn signal must be given whenever a turn is made to the right or the left. You must give a continuous turn signal for an adequate distance to alert other drivers before turning.”

Where should you be as you approach a right turn?

In the right lane, close to the curb. Swinging wide on a right turn takes you into the lane somebody else is already using. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.52: “Approach the intersection in the right lane, staying as close as practicable to the curb or edge of the roadway”

Your car breaks down. How much clear view of it does Georgia want in each direction?

200 feet. A car nobody can see until they are on top of it is the thing the next driver hits. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.53: “It is against the law to park on a highway. If the vehicle is disabled, you should make every practical effort to park off the highway, leaving free passage and a clear view of your vehicle for 200 feet in each direction.”

About how far from the other car does Georgia say to stop before backing in?

2 feet away. Starting too far out or too close in decides the whole park before you have touched the wheel. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.54: “you should be approximately 2 feet from the other car”

Where may you join a controlled-access roadway in Georgia?

Only at a built entrance or exit. Everything on that road is moving at full speed and nobody is looking at the verge for a car joining. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.56: “You are prohibited from entering or leaving any controlled-access roadway at unauthorized entrances or exits”

What does Georgia say about coasting in neutral down a hill?

It is prohibited there. In neutral the engine stops helping you hold the car back, and the brakes take the whole hill alone. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.56: “The driver of any motor vehicle, when traveling down a hill, must not coast with the gears or transmission of the vehicle in neutral.”

What does Georgia make unlawful about drugs and driving?

Driving impaired by any drug at all. Whatever is in you, the car behaves the same way and the road gives you no allowance for it. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.56: “It is unlawful for any person to operate a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, a drug (prescription or illegal), or any other substance which impairs his/her ability to safely do so”

How does Georgia define reckless driving?

Driving in reckless disregard for safety. The charge is about the risk you took rather than the crash you happened to avoid. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.56: “Reckless driving is defined as driving any vehicle in reckless disregard for the safety of persons or property.”

When does Georgia say to use high-beam headlights?

In rural areas with no cars nearby. Bright lights blind the driver coming at you, and a blinded driver steers toward what they can see. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.59: “Use high-beam headlights only when driving in rural areas and when other cars are not nearby.”

You see tail lights ahead of you in heavy fog. What does Georgia say to do?

Slow down further than you already had. Fog makes the car in front look farther away than it is, so what you see is already too close. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.106: “Reduce speed further when you see headlights or red tail Lights. These indicate the presence of another vehicle and, due to fog, it may be more difficult to accurately judge the distance between your vehicle and others”

Where does Georgia say the recommended tire pressure for your car is printed?

In the door jamb of the vehicle. A soft tire changes how the car steers and stops, and nothing on the dash will tell you. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.106: “Prior to entering vehicle check tire pressure using recommended psi located in the door jam of the vehicle.”

What are the early signs of carbon monoxide poisoning that Georgia names?

Sudden tiredness, yawning and dizziness. You cannot smell it or see it, so the tiredness is the only warning anybody gets. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.108: “Cars produce carbon monoxide, a deadly odorless and colorless gas. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are sudden weariness, yawning, dizziness, and nausea.”

What does Georgia name as the cause of a rear-end crash?

Following the vehicle ahead too closely. You cannot brake until you see the brake lights, and by then the other car has already begun stopping. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.109: “A rear-end crash is caused by following another vehicle too closely.”

Which traffic laws apply to a driver on a Georgia expressway?

All of them, as on any other road. A road with no cross streets feels like somewhere the rules have loosened, and Georgia says the same ones apply. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.111: “slower traffic should keep to the right; and all traffic laws and guidelines associated with safe driving still apply”

Up to what age must every occupant of a Georgia passenger vehicle wear a belt, front or back?

Under 18 years old. An unbelted passenger in the back is thrown forward into whoever is in front of them. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.59: “Georgia law states that each occupant in the front seat of a passenger vehicle traveling on Georgia roads and highways must be secured by a seat safety belt (lap and shoulder). All occupants of any passenger vehicle must utilize a seat safety belt if they are under the age of 18.”

What does Georgia law require of a driver about distraction?

Due care, and nothing that takes attention. A phone, a sandwich and a radio dial all cost you the same thing, which is the road in front of you. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.60: “Georgia law requires drivers to exercise due care in operating a motor vehicle and prohibits any action that distracts the driver from the safe operation of such vehicle.”

How close must somebody crossing be before a Georgia driver has to stop?

On your half of the road, or within one lane of it. Half the road is all the lanes going one way, so a walker one lane over is already your problem. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.117: “When the pedestrian is upon the half of the roadway on which the vehicle is traveling, or when the pedestrian is approaching and is within one lane of the half of the roadway on which the vehicle is traveling or onto which it is turning”

Which Georgia roads may a bicyclist not use?

The interstates and roads built like them. A rider on a county road is where the law puts them, so the road is theirs as much as yours. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.119: “Bicyclists are legally entitled to use every road in Georgia except the interstate and interstate-like highways (limited access highways).”

How much of a lane is a Georgia motorcycle allowed?

The full width of the lane. The room you would take is the room the rider needs to get around a pothole or some gravel. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.121: “Motorcycles are allowed the full width of a lane in which to maneuver. Although it may seem that there is enough room in the traffic lane for a motor vehicle and a motorcycle, the motorcycle needs the room to maneuver safely. Do not share the lane.”

How much does Georgia say a heavy truck typically weighs?

80,000 pounds or more. Weight is what decides how long anything takes to stop, and a truck has twenty times yours. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.124: “Heavy trucks typically weigh 80,000 pounds or more, and drivers should use caution when driving near them.”

What does Georgia ask of a driver approaching a postal or sanitation vehicle with lights on?

Move into a lane that is not next to it. Somebody is stepping in and out of that vehicle into the lane you are about to drive through. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.61: “Make a lane change into a lane not adjacent to the vehicle if possible in the existing safety and traffic conditions; or”

How many phases does Georgia’s graduated licensing program have?

Three phases. Each phase adds a freedom only after the last one has been driven without a violation. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.63: “In 1997 The Teenage and Driver Responsibility Act (TADRA) established a graduated driver's licensing program for teens ages 15 to 18 in Georgia. This means that teens progress through a licensing process in three phases.”

When may a Georgia Class D license holder not drive at all?

Between midnight and 5 a.m.. Those are the hours when the road is emptiest and the crashes are worst, so the state closes them. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.66: “A Class D license Holder may not drive between the hours of 12:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m.”

How long is a Georgia suspension for a driver under 21 on a first listed conviction?

Six months, and twelve for a later one. A suspension at that age lands on a job and a school run, which is what makes it bite. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.67: “The instructional permit or driver's license of any person under 21 years of age convicted of any of the following offenses shall be SUSPENDED for a period of six months for a first conviction, or for a period of twelve months for a second or subsequent conviction.”

What does Georgia law require of a driver about chemical testing?

Submitting to the state tests when asked. The license you hold came with that agreement attached, which is what implied consent means. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.130: “Georgia law requires you to submit to state administered chemical tests of your blood, breath, urine, or other bodily substances for the purpose of determining if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs.”

How many points in 24 months suspend a Georgia license?

15 or more. The window is two years long, so an old ticket is still on the pile when the next one lands. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.131: “For any person who accumulates 15 or more points within 24 months”

What does a revoked Georgia license mean?

Privileges end until the period runs out. Revocation ends the license rather than pausing it, so what comes next is a fresh application. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.127: “If a license is revoked, all driving privileges are terminated and withdrawn until the end of the period of time prescribed by the formal action of the Department.”

Above what property damage must a Georgia crash be reported to law enforcement?

Over $500. Below that figure it is between the drivers; above it the state wants a record of what happened. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.138: “Notify the nearest law enforcement agency immediately if anyone is injured or killed, or if property damage exceeds $500.00”

A deer crosses the road in front of you. What does Georgia say to expect?

Another deer following behind it. The deer you missed was the first of several, and the next one is already at the roadside. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.139: “Always slow down when a deer crosses the road in front of you or another car. Deer usually travel in groups and it is likely that there is another one following closely behind”

How long after becoming a Georgia resident must you get a Georgia license?

Within 30 days. A license from somewhere else stops covering you once Georgia counts you as living here. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.11: “Georgia law requires that any person wanting to operate a motor vehicle on the roadways of this state obtain a Georgia driver's License or permit within 30 days of becoming a resident.”

How many questions must a Georgia candidate answer correctly in each part of the knowledge exam?

15 out of 20. The two halves are scored on their own, so being strong on one does not carry the other. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.30: “You must correctly answer 15 out of 20 questions to pass.”

Where these come from
