Roadside service vehicles — Georgia Permit Test
Roadside service vehicles on the Georgia permit test — 3 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
Coming up to a postal service vehicle or a vehicle with sanitation workers at work showing flashing lights, a Georgia driver approaches with due caution and changes into a lane that is not next to it if that can be done safely.
Somebody is stepping in and out of that vehicle into the lane you are about to drive through.
Make a lane change into a lane not adjacent to the vehicle if possible in the existing safety and traffic conditions; or
Where a Georgia driver cannot change lanes away from a postal or sanitation vehicle, they slow to at least 10 miles per hour below the posted limit, or to 25 miles per hour, whichever is more, and are ready to stop.
Slowing is what buys you the second you need if a worker steps out from behind the truck.
If a lane change would be impossible, prohibited by law, or unsafe, reduce the speed of the motor vehicle to a reasonable and proper speed for the existing road and traffic conditions, which speed shall be at least ten miles per hour less than the posted speed limit or 25 miles per hour, whichever is more, and be prepared to stop.
The Georgia rule covers a postal service vehicle, or a vehicle with sanitation workers at work, that is showing flashing yellow, amber, white or red lights.
Those lights mean somebody is working beside the vehicle rather than driving it.
The operator of a motor vehicle approaching a postal service vehicle or a vehicle with active sanitation workers that is displaying flashing yellow, amber, white, or red lights shall approach the vehicle with due caution and shall (unless directed by a peace officer) proceed as follows:
On the test
What does Georgia ask of a driver approaching a postal or sanitation vehicle with lights on?
Move into a lane that is not next to it. Somebody is stepping in and out of that vehicle into the lane you are about to drive through. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.61: “Make a lane change into a lane not adjacent to the vehicle if possible in the existing safety and traffic conditions; or”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
