Passing — Georgia Permit Test

Passing on the Georgia permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

A passing zone is marked by striped lines to the right of the center line; if the line nearest your vehicle is solid, you are not in a passing zone.

The line nearest you is the one painted for your lane, and the other one is not talking to you.

A passing zone is indicated by striped lines to the right of the center line of the roadway. If the line nearest your vehicle is solid, you are not in a passing zone.

Georgia Driver's Manual, p.45

Before you can pass you must have time and space to get all the way back into the right lane before the zone ends, before any intersection, and before oncoming traffic is within 200 feet.

You are closing on the oncoming car at both your speeds added together, which is faster than it looks.

You must have sufficient time and space to execute your passing maneuver and return your vehicle completely to the right lane before the passing zone ends, before entering an intersection, and before oncoming traffic is within 200 feet of your vehicle

Georgia Driver's Manual, p.45

Before you leave your lane to pass, check the rear view and side mirrors and turn your head to look into your blind spot, making sure nobody is passing you.

The mirror has a gap in it exactly the size of the car that is already alongside you.

Before leaving your lane to begin passing, check your rear view and side mirrors, and turn your head and look back to check your "blind spot."

Georgia Driver's Manual, p.45

You pass on the left, and you do not come back into the right lane until you can see the car you passed in your rear view mirror.

Cutting back in early puts your rear bumper where the other driver has already committed their front one.

Pass on the left and do not return to the right lane until your vehicle is safely clear of the overtaken vehicle. Wait until you can see the car you have just passed in your rear view mirror

Georgia Driver's Manual, p.45

You signal right before you move back into the right lane after a pass, and you cancel the signal once you are back in it.

A signal left blinking tells the next driver you are turning, and they pull out expecting you to leave.

Activate your right turn signal before returning to the right lane. Be sure to turn your signal off once you have returned to the right lane.

On the test

How do you know from the paint that you are not in a passing zone?

The line nearest your lane is solid. The line nearest you is the one painted for your lane, and the other one is not talking to you. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.45: “A passing zone is indicated by striped lines to the right of the center line of the roadway. If the line nearest your vehicle is solid, you are not in a passing zone.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
