Passing prohibited — Georgia Permit Test

Passing prohibited on the Georgia permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

On a two-lane road, passing is prohibited within 100 feet of a railroad crossing.

A crossing hides a train behind whatever is beside the track, and you are on the wrong side of the road.

Within 100 feet of a railroad crossing

Georgia Driver's Manual, p.46

Passing is also prohibited within 100 feet of a bridge, a viaduct or a tunnel.

There is no shoulder on a bridge, so a pass that goes wrong there has nowhere to go but into something.

Within 100 feet of a bridge, viaduct or tunnel

Georgia Driver's Manual, p.46

You may not pass on a hill or a curve where you cannot see whether an oncoming vehicle is close enough to be a hazard.

What you cannot see on a blind hill is a car closing on you at both your speeds put together.

On a hill or curve where it is not possible to see oncoming vehicles which might be close enough to be a hazard

Georgia Driver's Manual, p.46

Passing on the shoulder of the road is prohibited in Georgia.

The shoulder is where broken-down cars and people changing tires are, and it is not built to drive on.

On the shoulder of the road

Georgia Driver's Manual, p.46

Passing is allowed where an obstruction makes it necessary to drive left of the center line, but only after you have yielded to the oncoming traffic.

Something in your lane is your problem, not the problem of the driver coming the other way.

An obstruction makes it necessary to drive to the left of the center line, but only after yielding to oncoming traffic

On the test

How close to a railroad crossing does Georgia ban passing on a two-lane road?

Within 100 feet of it. A crossing hides a train behind whatever is beside the track, and you are on the wrong side of the road. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.46: “Within 100 feet of a railroad crossing”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
