Before you drive — Georgia Permit Test

Before you drive on the Georgia permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

Before you get in, Georgia says to check the tire pressure against the recommended figure printed in the door jamb of the vehicle, letting air out or adding it until it matches.

A soft tire changes how the car steers and stops, and nothing on the dash will tell you.

Prior to entering vehicle check tire pressure using recommended psi located in the door jam of the vehicle.

The penny test checks tread depth: put the head into the shallowest groove, and if any part of it is covered you still have the legal and safe amount of tread.

Bald tires hold the road in the dry and then let go the moment it rains.

If any part of Lincoln's head is covered by the tread, you're driving with the legal and safe amount of tread.

Where the car is parked on the street, Georgia says to get in from the curb side, and to wait until you can do it safely where that is not possible.

Walking around into the traffic side puts you in a lane with your back to whatever is coming.

If you are parked on the street, enter from the curb side of the vehicle.

Georgia puts the seat belt before the ignition: you fasten yours and see that your passengers do the same before you start the engine.

Nobody belts up once the car is moving, because by then it stops feeling worth doing.

Before starting your ignition, fasten your seat belt and make sure your passengers do the same

Georgia gives 9 and 3 as the general rule for where your hands go on the wheel, and says to keep both hands on it unless you are safely doing another driving task.

One hand on the wheel is fine until something happens, and then it is half the grip you needed.

As a general rule, when gripping the steering wheel, place your left hand at the 9 o'clock position and your right hand at the 3 o'clock position on the wheel.

On the test

Where does Georgia say the recommended tire pressure for your car is printed?

In the door jamb of the vehicle. A soft tire changes how the car steers and stops, and nothing on the dash will tell you. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.106: “Prior to entering vehicle check tire pressure using recommended psi located in the door jam of the vehicle.”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
