Fog and vision — Georgia Permit Test

Fog and vision on the Georgia permit test — 4 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

In heavy fog Georgia says to reduce your driving speed, and to reduce it further the moment you see headlights or tail lights ahead of you.

Fog makes the car in front look farther away than it is, so what you see is already too close.

Reduce speed further when you see headlights or red tail Lights. These indicate the presence of another vehicle and, due to fog, it may be more difficult to accurately judge the distance between your vehicle and others

Georgia Driver's Manual, p.106

In heavy fog you dim your headlights, because bright lights make a glare off the fog that leaves you seeing less than ordinary headlights would.

The fog throws your own light back at you, so the brighter the beam the whiter the wall.

Dim your headlights. Bright lights produce a glare in heavy fog, actually making it more difficult to see than when using regular headlights

Georgia Driver's Manual, p.107

Georgia says not to drive with the parking lights or the hazard lights on in fog.

Hazard lights say you have stopped, so a moving car wearing them tells the driver behind a lie.

Do not drive with parking or hazard lights on.

Georgia Driver's Manual, p.107

Where you can, Georgia says avoid driving in heavy fog altogether rather than working out how to do it.

No technique makes up for not being able to see, and the fog will have lifted in an hour.

If possible, avoid driving in heavy fog.

On the test

You see tail lights ahead of you in heavy fog. What does Georgia say to do?

Slow down further than you already had. Fog makes the car in front look farther away than it is, so what you see is already too close. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.106: “Reduce speed further when you see headlights or red tail Lights. These indicate the presence of another vehicle and, due to fog, it may be more difficult to accurately judge the distance between your vehicle and others”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
