Railroad crossings — Georgia Permit Test
Railroad crossings on the Georgia permit test — 5 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.
The rules
At a railroad crossing you must stop within 50 feet of the nearest rail but no closer than 15 feet whenever the signal is flashing, the gates are down, a flagman signals, a train is close enough to be a hazard, or a stop sign is posted.
Stopping any closer puts your hood inside the swing of a train, which is wider than the rail.
You must always stop within 50 feet, but not less than 15 feet, from the nearest rail of a railroad crossing when any of the following apply
Georgia says that under no circumstances may a driver go through, around or under a crossing gate while the gate is lowered.
The gate is down because a train is coming, and there is no version of going around it that works.
Under no circumstances should a motorist drive through, around or under any crossing gate while the gate is lowered.
Once you have stopped at a crossing you stay stopped until every track is clear, the warning signals stop flashing, the gates are raised and it is safe to go.
One train going by can be hiding a second one on the next track, coming the other way.
After stopping, remain stopped until all tracks are clear, all railroad crossing warning signals stop flashing, the crossing gates are raised, and it is safe to proceed.
Georgia tells drivers not to enter a crossing unless they can drive all the way through it without stopping.
Traffic on the far side can stop without warning, and then you are the car left on the tracks.
If it won't fit, don't commit. Do not enter a crossing unless you can drive completely through without stopping!
If your vehicle stalls on the tracks, Georgia says get out immediately, move away, find the emergency notification sign for the contact number and call for help.
A car is worth less than you are, and a train cannot stop in the distance you can see it from.
Get out immediately
On the test
Where does Georgia require you to stop at a railroad crossing?
Within 50 feet, but no closer than 15 feet. Stopping any closer puts your hood inside the swing of a train, which is wider than the rail. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.48: “You must always stop within 50 feet, but not less than 15 feet, from the nearest rail of a railroad crossing when any of the following apply”
How this works
Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.
You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.
Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.
What it costs
- One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
- Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
- Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
- Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
- Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
