Points system — Georgia Permit Test

Points system on the Georgia permit test — 9 rules, each with the reason behind it and a question on it while it is fresh.

The rules

Georgia suspends a license for anybody who builds up 15 or more points within 24 months.

The window is two years long, so an old ticket is still on the pile when the next one lands.

For any person who accumulates 15 or more points within 24 months

Georgia Driver's Manual, p.131

A Georgia driver under 18 is suspended for building up 4 points within twelve months, which is far less room than an adult gets.

Two ordinary moving violations can reach that total, which is why the young limit feels so tight.

For any person under 18 years of age with an accumulation of 4 points within twelve months.

Georgia Driver's Manual, p.131

Speeding 15 to 18 miles per hour over the posted limit carries 2 points on a Georgia record.

The points climb in steps with the speed, so each band over the limit costs more than the last.

Speeding - 15-18 mph over the posted speed limit 2

Georgia Driver's Manual, p.130

Speeding 24 to 33 miles per hour over the posted limit carries 4 points on a Georgia record.

Four points is the level at which a driver under 21 loses the license outright.

Speeding - 24-33 mph over the posted speed limit 4

Georgia Driver's Manual, p.130

Unlawfully passing a stopped school bus carries 6 points on a Georgia record, the heaviest the table sets.

Georgia prices that offense at the top of its table because of who is crossing the road.

Georgia Driver's Manual, p.130

A licensed Georgia resident may ask the Department to take up to 7 points off their record once every 5 years.

The reduction is a one-off favor on a long clock, so it cannot be used to absorb a habit.

Licensed Georgia residents may request that DDS reduce the number of points assessed against their Georgia driver's license up to 7 points once every 5 years.

Georgia Driver's Manual, p.131

To earn a points reduction in Georgia you complete a certified 6-hour driver improvement course and give the original certificate to the Department.

The course is the price of the reduction, and the original paper is the only proof they accept.

To qualify for a points reduction, you must successfully complete a certified 6-hour driver improvement (defensive driving) course and present the original certificate of completion to the DDS by mail or in person at one of our Customer Service Centers.

Georgia Driver's Manual, p.132

Where a Georgia driver completes the certified course before their court date and presents the certificate, the court cuts the fine by 20 percent and assesses no points at all.

Doing the course before court is worth more than doing it afterward, because it stops the points.

When the original certificate of completion is presented to the court, the court shall reduce the fine assessed by 20 percent and no points shall be assessed against the driver.

Georgia Driver's Manual, p.132

When a Georgia license is suspended for points, the point total goes back to zero.

The suspension is the whole price of those points, so afterward the record starts again.

When a license is suspended due to an accumulation of points, the point total is restored to zero.

On the test

How many points in 24 months suspend a Georgia license?

15 or more. The window is two years long, so an old ticket is still on the pile when the next one lands. Georgia Driver's Manual, p.131: “For any person who accumulates 15 or more points within 24 months”

How this works

Most practice tests hand you a bank of questions and leave the manual somewhere else. This one puts them together.

You read one law and the reason behind it, then answer a question on that law while it is still fresh. Get it right and you move on; get it wrong and you have found the gap while it is cheap to fix, not on the morning of the exam.

Learning one rule at a time, and proving it immediately, is what turns a manual you skimmed into something you actually know — and it makes studying feel like getting somewhere rather than like waiting to find out.

What it costs

  • One payment, once — not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel, for an exam you sit one time.
  • Free to start: a 10-question test and the first section of cards. No sign-up and no account.
  • Paying opens the rest of the cards, unlimited full-length practice tests, and retests built from exactly the questions you got wrong.
  • Every level up to Prepared — 3 tests passed in a row.
  • Do the work, fail the real exam, and we refund you.
